(SCEI) announced today that it would commence \u201cPlayStation\u00aeBB\u201d services using PlayStation\u00ae2 as a home terminal from April 2002. \u201cPlayStation BB\u201d is a platform to enjoy broadband network services provided through PlayStation 2 connected to a TV monitor and to the always-on broadband networks. Taking advantage of the penetration of broadband networks, various interactive broadband content such as games, music, broadcasting and publishing, will become available on TV monitor in the living room. Collaborating with its business partners, SCEI will vigorously develop for PlayStation 2 various broadband services which are more enhanced than what is available on PC\u2019s today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"sie-paragraph\">For \u201cPlayStation BB\u201d services, server hosting\/housing and billing\/collection services and functions will be provided through SCEI\u2019s partner network providers. Such services and functions are supported by DNAS (Dynamic Network Authentication System), SCEI\u2019s proprietary authentication system, to form a comprehensive single platform, which offers secured and copyright protected environment for content providers to unfold their businesses. A wide variety of services as well as connectivity to open networks, such as the existing Internet and mobile phones, are also made possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"sie-paragraph\">For the users who receive Broadband Unit for PlayStation 2 from SCEI\u2019s partner network providers, the company will offer \u201cBroadband Navigator\u201d for enjoying broadband content in the living room. With \u201cBroadband Navigator\u201d, not only will users be able to experience games, music and movies in an unified way as if switching TV channels, but also become able to enjoy the existing Internet content based on HTML\/XML*.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"sie-paragraph\">Basic functions of \u201cBroadband Navigator\u201d are as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"sie-paragraph\">PlayStation 2 Emulator \/ PlayStation 2 Player Enables to play PlayStation and PlayStation 2 software titles download (e-Distribution) from the networks on to the HDD.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"sie-paragraph\">Mailing \/ instant messaging Enables to send and receive mails and instant messages by issuing user ID\u2019s.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"sie-paragraph\">PlayStation jukebox Enables to play music downloaded from the networks on to the HDD.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"sie-paragraph\">RealPlayer\u00ae (provided by RealNetworks\u00ae, Inc.) Enables to play streaming videos through the networks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"sie-paragraph\">Using the powerful hardware assets of PlayStation 2 and by adding various network interfaces and firmware, SCEI will aggressively extend \u201cBroadband Navigator\u201d functions to the networked AV, such as personal video recorder (PVR) with TV tuner, home server, extended DVD video player, and others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"sie-paragraph\">Through \u201cPlayStation BB\u201d services, Sony Computer Entertainment will create and develop a new world of broadband entertainment (e-Broadcasting) through the fusion of games, music, movies, broadcasting and publishing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size sie-paragraph\">* XML (Extended Markup Language) = Language to program environment where broadband content is seamlessly integrated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"sie-paragraph\"><strong class=\"sie-paragraph\">About Sony Computer Entertainment Inc.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"sie-paragraph\">Recognized as the global leader and company responsible for the progression of consumer-based computer entertainment, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc.
