Tokyo, January 30, 2002<\/strong> \u2013 Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) announced today that it would release \u201cLinux (for PlayStation\u00ae2)\u201d Release 1.0 for Linux developers worldwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In response to many requests from the Japanese Linux society to enjoy Linux programming on PlayStation 2, Linux Beta Version, which was being developed for research and development purpose at SCEI, was made available to Linux users in Japan in May 2001. Since then, many Linux users have cooperated in the evaluation of the product. Initially SCEI planned a limited sale of 2,000 units, but due to the large numbers of requests, SCEI provided a total of approximately 7,900 units to Linux enthusiasts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the release of the Beta version, users have continued on with the petition drive in Linux community websites (*1) in Japan for the worldwide release of an upgraded version. Also, according to web-questionnaires conducted by Sony Computer Entertainment America and Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, 28,000 people signed up as of January 25th, 2001.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This movement has led SCEI to release the upgraded version as \u201cLinux (for PlayStation 2)\u201d Release 1.0 to participate and support the voluntary activities of Linux developers worldwide. Through Linux for PlayStation 2, Linux community users are able to enjoy the PlayStation 2 architecture as a broadband device different from PCs and SCEI expects the wide spread of broadband application of PlayStation 2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Upgraded \u201cLinux (for PlayStation 2)\u201d Release 1.0 reflects numerous feedback received for the Beta version. Its software consists of two disks; \u201cDISK 1\u201d Runtime Environment containing SCEI\u2019s intellectual property software components and System Manual and \u201cDISK 2\u201d Software Packages containing open source Linux software. (*2) Both disks are operable on PlayStation 2 SCPH-10000, SCPH-15000, SCPH-18000 and SCPH-30000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Linux kit this time consists of Hard Disk Drive, two disks installed with necessary software, Network Adaptor, USB Keyboard, USB Mouse and Monitor Cable Adaptor. Also, for users who already own the Beta version, upgraded software will be released.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To provide continuous support to the users of Linux community through the networks, sales of the product is made through PlayStation.com (Japan) Inc. website (http:\/\/www.jp.playstation.com\/).
