Enabling Environmental Action with the CleanPlay App on PlayStation 5

At Sony Interactive Entertainment, our vision for sustainability is to use our technology and business to inspire change – driving an impact beyond gaming. As we try to forge this path, we continuously seek ways to support PlayStation gamers on this journey. We’re excited to share news on a new third-party application called CleanPlay, which is now available in PlayStation Store.
Accessible from the PlayStation 5 console, the application gives players insight into the energy use of gaming and how to reduce it, matches them with opportunities to support new renewable energy projects to help the transition to zero-carbon energy, and offers digital rewards for their contributions.
Founded by industry veterans Richard Hilleman and David Helgason, CleanPlay is a platform dedicated to helping address the issue of climate change.
CleanPlay users not only have the opportunity to be rewarded by the prospect of driving responsible energy use and having agency on how it can be achieved, but with support from our valued developer partners, CleanPlay offers premium in-game rewards. Additional information on in-game rewards is forthcoming.
Hilleman shares that one of the primary goals of CleanPlay is to help increase investment in sustainable energy sources.
“We’re giving players the opportunity to participate in the process of influencing how the grid is composed in the future to serve their gaming needs,” Hillerman says. “And we’re doing that with various options that we believe will have a long-term impact on how power grids develop.” Within the app, users can become educated on the initiatives supporting renewable energy and designate contributions towards their preferred outlet.
The millions of PlayStation console users worldwide can support action to address climate change.
Adds Hilleman: “If gamers decide to make a change, that change is likely to be large, permanent, and forward-looking.”
Dr. Jon Koomey, climate researcher, lecturer and author, agrees that projects such as CleanPlay are an important part of a forward-looking sustainability strategy.
“Reducing carbon emissions from electricity use requires the addition of zero emissions generation that wouldn’t have been built otherwise,” says Dr. Koomey. “CleanPlay empowers gamers to support such projects, helping to transform the electricity system and reduce overall emissions.”
Sony Interactive Entertainment is a part of Sony Group’s Road to Zero plan, in which we have made a number of long-term commitments to address our environmental footprint. We have already adopted various energy-efficient technologies for our consoles, including system-on-a-chip integrated circuits, optimized power scaling, automatic power down, and low power rest modes (see link for more details). We have also recently introduced adaptive charging. When enabled, this feature reduces PS5 rest mode power from up to 3.1 W to 1.0 W and below once accessory charging is complete. We have further improvements planned and look forward to sharing our updates.
We’re proud to work with individuals and organizations sharing our curiosity and commitment to advancing how we play and a more sustainable future for gaming.
